MotoGP: Riders can qualify during warm-up
New ruling sounds weird but will mean CRTs stand a better chance of qualifying
DORNA have announced a number of changes for MotoGP in 2012.
Riders who don't qualify during the qualifying session are now able to qualify for the grid if they post a time equal to or faster than 107% of the fastest rider's time in the warm-up session. Previously, this rule also existed for Free Practice sessions and so now applies to all sessions.
The other rule change that questions MotoGP's standing as the proving ground for the world's ultimate racing motorcycles is the minimum weight limit: it has now been increased to 157kg from 153kg for 2012 and for 2013 will increase again to 160kg.
Nine CRT teams have been approved by the GP Commission to run alongside 12 factory MotoGP teams, meaning there will be at least 21 bikes on the grid in 2012.
