I'm looking for a cheap Suzuki GSX1400 to do up.
Anything considered,
Neglected, in need of work, accident damaged etc.
If anyone hears of something suitable please give me a shout.
Cheers,
G.

Winter Project GSX1400 Empty Analysis

Post by G-force Tue 27 Nov - 7:02

This bike has minor damage. It's been down on the left side damaging an engine casing, steering stem lug, clock casings and denting the tank. Also a few scuffs and scratches here and there.
The casing has been replaced but the rest will need dealt with asap.

Having given the bike a thorough look over this is what needs done,
Steering stem lug either needs welded back on or repaired in some other way. Failing that it'll need a new bottom yoke, which I'm trying to avoid because they are seriously pricey and second hand ones are like hens teeth!
The clock casings are also few and far between so I think they will need replaced with new ones. Or, rubbed down, repaired and painted..
The dent in the tank will be repaired when it comes to painting the rest of the bodywork.

Rust curing.
There are small amounts of rust at the usual places on the frame. They're not really a concern and can be easily tidied up.
But, The springs at the back have rust at the bottom. I'm toying with getting them powder coated. Not sure if that's feasible due to the fact that they move/compress etc. Will it crack?
What other options do I have?

In general, apart from a bit of a tidy up and paint the bike is decent.
The rest is just going to be personal touches I want to add but The twin can conversion is a priority.

Watch this space.. Very Happy

Opinions please..
Engine casings, gloss or matt black?
Personally, I'm thinking all matt but maybe gloss engine casings would go well with the rest of the frame etc?

Strangely I think gloss along with the swing arm. Unless your going to paint all of the engine. Then it would be matt black all the way. Vader bike

Apparently
Will Powder Coat Flex With Items Like Automotive Coil Springs?
Powder coating is one of the only coatings that can withstand repetitive flexing commonly found on automotive springs.

From a powdercoaters website

Looks like the engine is matt anyway. Unless that's just dirt! Maybe I should give it a clean!

I've been offered a swap for my rear left footrest hanger for a K4 hanger with exhaust mount. However, Mine was damaged when the bike went down. There's no way I could swap it in this condition.

So I set about it with a file and some emery. Here's the result.

Now I can swap it.

Can anyone recommend a decent local ally welder?
This stopper on the steering stem needs welded back on. I have the piece that broke off so it should be a simple enough job for someone with the right gear and skill..

The eBay parts are starting to mount up! Very Happy
Hopefully this week I'll get the Forks, Swinging Arm and shocks off and it'll be closer to the paint and powdercoat stage. The clock casings have taken a bigger beating than I originally thought.

I've started rubbing them down and will be experimenting with plastic welding and filling soon..

It looks like I'll need to make a plate up to replace the broken part under the speedo and the shroud will need sanded and filled. So that'll be more parts going black!

Should be pretty easy to do your casing as long as the damage isn't too deep. Might even be able to do it while it's still on the bike but you'd need to polish it up afterwards to get a proper finish on it. Don't know how it would last long term though. Once the surface is broken they tend to tarnish and go kind of darker grey. Maybe some sort of laquer could protect it?

How it looks now..

The collector was a bit of a bitch to get off. Ended up using a blow torch to get some heat into it and had to splay the slotted ends with a big flat screwdriver to get it to move. After I got it off I could get the bike up on the bike lift. I've now stripped the forks and swing arm off. Not much left of it now. The only other parts to come off are the engine casings and maybe the oil cooler for a tidy up.

Other issues I've come accross are, Heavy pitted corrosion on the top of the fork stantions. I've started to rub it down but with not much success. I'll need to look into re-chroming or coating to get rid of it or possibly a carbon wrap down to just below the yokes.

Another problem I've discovered is the left rear shock is bent. Yet another part to have taken an impact. They will be getting stripped down to powdercoat the springs so I'll be attempting to straighten the damper rod while it's apart..
